It’s implied but it could have been delved into or even mentioned. We are given some back story but in April’s case there is very little and it is not explained how seeing her mother treated poorly by her father affected the way she saw her own body. The same goes for the parental relationships with both parents. Why was she “fat” (authors words)? Was it over eating due to depression or lack of self control or was it genetic or medically related? What was her relationship with her body like when she was younger and how did she get to where she is now? These are all questions that could have added so much more depth to the character and why she reacts as she does when her body is made the topic of discussion. Representation of all body types is much needed and appreciated but when it is one of the only plot points and it is not well explained, it gets old by the end of the book. There was some character development for Marcus but April showed no change at all. I only finished this book so that I could say with certainty that it was bad all the way through.
